The Manitoba Securities Commission Launches Information Campaign
Aimed at Alleviating Investor Anxiety
October 5, 2009 – Winnipeg, Manitoba – The financial woes of the past year have left many Manitobans unwilling or uninterested in monitoring their investments. To help investors get past their concerns and regain an interest in their investments, The Manitoba Securities Commission (MSC) is launching a comprehensive information campaign, complete with a free Investor Kit, as part of Investor Education Month.
“When it comes to the world of investments, some things are out of our control” states Ainsley Cunningham, Manager, Education and Communications with MSC. “As individuals, we cannot stop a recession; we cannot predict a bear market and we cannot foresee certain life events that may wreak havoc on our long-term planning.” 65% of Manitobans, the highest in the country, are worried they do not have enough savings to meet all of their financial needs (Canadian Securities Administrators’ Investor Index 2009). “Rather than ignore what is happening around us out of fear or panic and make irrational decisions, the MSC wants to encourage Manitobans to take the necessary steps that will make them feel more comfortable, more at ease with their investment strategies,” she says.
The information campaign, which features television, radio and outdoor ads, centers around “Roger”, an obviously fearful investor who will do just about anything to avoid his investments. “Roger is not unlike many of us- he is unsure of what to do with his investments, he has financial obligations and is not immune to human emotion,” indicates Ms Cunningham. “Taking an active role in investments may be easier than some people think. By identifying personal financial goals, reviewing statements, working with a financial adviser and keeping abreast of current investor scams, people can be sure they are making informed investment decisions,” she concludes.
Information about ordering the Free Investor’s Kit is available at MSCed.ca. The website also includes an up-to-date list of registered advisers and other financial resources.
